SmartPulse — our weekly nonscientific reader poll in SmartBrief on Leadership — tracks feedback from more than 170,000 business leaders. We run the poll question each Tuesday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: How prepared is your organization for an unexpected business interruption?

  • Very well prepared: 12.74%
  • Well prepared: 33.98%
  • Somewhat prepared: 34.17%
  • Unprepared: 15.25%
  • Very unprepared: 3.86%

Hope for the best, plan for the worst. There are few things worse than an unexpected business interruption. We all hate change in our routines. The real question is how painful will that interruption be? Preparation and pre-planning can minimize the negative impacts of these unexpected events but you have to prepare now so you’re not caught short when the unexpected happens. For the more than half of you who range from somewhat prepared to very unprepared, I suggest you start pre-planning and creating contingency plans now. For those who are well/very well prepared, be sure to occasionally confirm your readiness.
